Why is it important to learn how to swim?Drowning is silent and can happen quickly. Almost 800 children drown in the U.S. every year. Drowning remains the number one cause of injury-related death among children ages 1-4. Babies & toddlers are more likely to drown in a backyard home pool. The second-leading cause of injury-related death for children less than 14 years old. 5-17 year olds are more likely to drown in natural water. It is vital to acquire the ability to survive in water. Once in the water both children and adults must have the critical skills to get back to the surface, float, tread water, and swim to where they can stand or grab onto something to save their life. If you know how to swim, you might have a chance of saving your child or someone else close to you. Being scared of the water isn’t a reason not to take, or to quit, swimming lessons. Carole will start gradually with lots of positive reinforcement for those children and adults who may be frightened or reluctant to enter a pool.

Learning to swim freestyle, breast stroke, butterfly and/or backstroke offers a fun way to keep kids and adults active and healthy all year long. Studies have shown that swimming can also develop mototskill, improve concentration and memory.
